Oncology Appointment April 1, 2025

After 4 days of trying to get a Pet Scan scheduled through my primary care doctor and finding out that BCBS would not authorize the pet scan without a biopsy, off to my oncologist I went.

Alan Kritz, M.D. at UNC Cancer Center across the street from Rex Hospital  has been my oncologist for 10 years, and he and his team are the absolute best and brightest. I'm very comfortable there and I trust them completely.  

Chuck and I had an appointment with him and he examined me and then reviewed the CT Scan with us and he had no doubt this was cancer.  He was very sure.  Dr. Kritz said these words "this is likely to be metastatic breast cancer, but that it could be other types of cancer, but...it appears to be cancer. Chuck took it very, very hard quickly as this was the most unbelievable news and we were not expecting this conversation right now.  

"Wait, What???", I said.  "I am 13 days away of being 15 years cancer-free. I was cured".  I'm holding Chucks hand really tight because I can see he is going down, we are devastated.  I cannot remember much more from that office visit.

Dr. Kritz's PA and nurse were there and you could tell, the team was assembled and they were about to go into action. They ordered the CT Guided Bone Marrow Biopsy with sedation at Rex Hospital for Friday, April 4th. And they ordered a Pet Scan and assured me it would be approved, not to worry. That is set for 4/23...our 11th wedding anniversary. 

After spending 108 minutes there, we left...Chuck was just not good at all.  I went to thinking in business mode....do this, do that, arrange this, arrange that. I was worried about my business that I have built for 13 years at NC Pro Realty. Can I work?? We wanted to go see Justin and Cassandra immediately. We didn't know what to do really, but we needed them for us. I needed my son. It felt weird even thinking that way....a son is supposed to "need' his mom, not the other way around like that. 

Chuck was too upset to drive, so I drove. I was fine, I was fine, I was fine. Please God let me be fine.

The Last 2 Weeks

Hello all, this is Chuck writing.   First off, I want to thank all of you for walking this journey with us.  The prayers, calls, texts, messages, food, cards and visits have meant the world to us. Jill just completed her 2nd week on the medication of Ibrance.  So far so good…The side effects have been fairly minimal and her blood counts are good.  She is still adjusting to the hormone therapy and is experiencing on/off fatigue, pain and some nausea.  The side effects have lessened from the 1st medication since she started the anastrozole several weeks back.  She is stronger emotionally and is a trooper and our hope and prayer is that these medicines are working to suppress her cancer from moving and reappearing.  She will have a Pet Scan in a few months to determine how effective the radiation and hormone therapy has been.  We are confident that they are doing their job! What A Difference A Week Makes

 Hi Friends and Family - Here we are, the last day of May - can you believe it? Time sure does fly, that's not just a saying...that's for real.  Tomorrow, June 1, will be 2 months since we first met with my oncologist and hear him say, "I think this is your breast cancer metastasized to your bone".  In some ways, it's hard to believe it has been 2 months already, and in others, it feels like yesterday.  From day 1 (probably from birth), I've been complex. I've lived a somewhat complex life in my growing years and beyond at times, and this breast cancer since 2010 has been a little out of the norm - a little complex.  In my primary cancer in 2010 (remember....if you're metastatic, the original breast cancer is called "primary"), my breast surgeon at the time, Dr. Stocks, said "this is Sheryl Crow style cancer - you have one little tumor...we'll do a lumpectomy and radiation likely and that is it."  Well...nope. Radiation Complete - The Latest News

 Hi Friends and Family! It's been 12 days since we've written!  Here is the big news - RADIATION IS COMPLETE!  Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of SBRT Radiation is like? haha!  Sure you have! Well...it's a very precise science. Literally, this radiation finds its way around organs and the bladder, bowel, to get right to the tumor site and zap it without damaging my insides along the way.  Before the SBRT radiation is even scheduled, a 3D model is created using specific software, with the CT Scan and Pet Scan that I did earlier. The  radiation therapists - I always had 4 of them align my body precisely—within millimeters—using lasers and real-time imaging called Cone Beam CT Scan.  This is done each and every time.  There were sheets underneath me the radiation techs would pull to move me, and the the bed itself would move.
